I would like opinions on the best option for long range calibers.
.308/7.62 X 51 Or 6.5 Creedmoor?
Target and varmint.

I would like opinions on the best option for long range calibers. .308/7.62 X 51 Or 6.5 Creedmoor? Target and varmint. Welcome to the board. Depends on the size of varmint and an expected range of them and the targets you wish to address. Is it high volume critters or target work? Long range PRS stuff vs 3Gun style? AR 15 or 10 or bolt? Lots of landscape to cover on that question. With my selection of guns and platforms I'm worse than a golfer with a bag of clubs so can pick one for each hole I want to place in something. Some cross over better than others . Greg

Lol.. Oddly I do get your golfing reference. I was being vague but I'm talking ground hogs up to 200-300 yards for farmers, coyote and fox typically about 100 yards or so in the woods They can be out to 300 to 400 yards on the mountain sides. I'd prefer the AR platform. Not a competition setting such as 3 gun but possibly paper target fun comps at 100 to 300 yards at the range.

I would not use either of those. They require an AR10 and realistically to me that's too much physical abuse for the task at hand. If you are an experienced reloader I'd look at at a 6X6.8 or a 243 LBC or aletenatvliy a hot 22 like the 22 Nosler if I were stuck with factory ammo. The 223 will certainly carry the mail to 300 but a bit more horsepower is nice. An easy peasy reload choice with a nice step up would be a 6X45. Your needs are easy to fill to the extent for me it would come down to mood. The hot rocks 22-NXS is probably the King for 22-250 performance in an AR with the 22X6.8 being right below it.
My choice of hole punchers is almost unlimited thanks to wildcat chamberings and 45 years of work at a reloading bench.

Ok then, it sounds like 22-250 it is then. Thank you for the advice and sharing of experience. Looks like I have some catching up to do on the losding bench.as well.

That'll work but the Nosler would too. I feel the Nosler with small bullets is better than the Valkyrie. More boiler room for more powder at the same pressure means better performance. Greg
